Why Cheap PPE Costs More

I've been on sites where guys show up with $8 gloves from the dollar store. By lunch, they're shredded. By the end of the week, they've bought three pairs — and one of them ended up in a near miss when the grip gave out at the wrong moment.

Cheap PPE isn't a deal. It's a recurring cost with a side order of risk.

The Math Nobody Does

Let's run the numbers on gloves. A $9 pair that lasts two shifts costs you roughly $2.25 per shift. A $24 pair that lasts three weeks costs about $1.60 per shift. The quality glove is cheaper — and it protected your hands the whole time.

That math holds across almost every category of PPE. Headlamps, boots, harnesses, respirators. Buying cheap is a subscription model where you keep paying and keep getting less.

The CSA Problem

In Canada, PPE has to meet CSA standards to be legal on a regulated work site. Safety boots must meet CSA Z195. Hard hats, harnesses, respirators — all have their own standards.

A lot of cheap PPE doesn't meet them. It looks the part, maybe even has a sticker, but it hasn't gone through proper testing. That means:

• Your insurance may not cover an injury from non-compliant gear
• Your employer can face fines from the Ministry of Labour
• You're not actually protected — you just think you are

Non-compliant gear on an Ontario construction site is a violation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. It's not worth it.

What You're Actually Paying For

When you buy quality PPE from a reputable source, you're paying for:

• Tested materials — the cut rating, impact rating, and protection level have been verified
• Consistent construction — the seams don't blow out, the sole doesn't delaminate
• Longer service life — the gear does what it's supposed to for longer
• Real coverage — compliant gear means the incident report doesn't also become an equipment violation

The Hidden Cost Nobody Counts

Downtime. If you're stopping to replace gear mid-shift, or worse, if you're off the job because something failed that shouldn't have — that's lost income. That's a claim. That's time you're not earning.

The $15 you saved on a pair of boots doesn't feel like much until it's the difference between a clean incident and a compensation claim.
