What Every New Apprentice Needs

What Every New Apprentice Needs

Starting your first apprenticeship is one of the biggest steps you'll take. You're going to learn more in the first month on site than you did in any classroom — and you're going to need the right gear to get through it safely.

Here's what every new apprentice needs before they show up on day one.

Safety Footwear

Non-negotiable. CSA Z195 Grade 1 safety boots with a steel or composite toe and puncture-resistant sole. You won't be let on most sites without them.

Don't buy the cheapest pair you can find. Your feet are on concrete for 8–10 hours a day. Bad boots will wreck your joints before you're 30. Spend what it takes to get a pair that fits properly and has a proper shank for arch support.

Safety Gloves

You'll go through gloves fast as an apprentice — a lot of the early work is grunt work. Get a few pairs of a mid-range cut-resistant glove (A4 or A5) with a good nitrile grip. Don't buy one pair. Buy three.

Hard Hat

CSA Z94.1 certified. Class E (electrical) if you're going into electrical or any trade where overhead wiring is a possibility — which on a construction site, it often is. Check the manufacture date stamped inside — hard hats expire, usually 5 years from manufacture.

Safety Glasses

CSA Z94.3 certified. Get a pair that fits your face and doesn't fog up — you won't wear them if they bother you, and that defeats the purpose. Get a backup pair.

High-Visibility Vest

CSA Z96 Class 2 at minimum. Mandatory near roadways and on most commercial construction sites. Keep it clean — a dirty vest loses its reflective properties faster than you'd think.

Headlamp

Underground work, crawl spaces, attics, early mornings and late nights — a hands-free light source is something you'll reach for constantly. A good LED headlamp with high lumen output and long battery life pays for itself the first week.

Ear Protection

Hearing loss is cumulative and irreversible. Start protecting your hearing from day one. Foam disposables in your pocket every day, plus a set of earmuffs for heavy noise environments. You won't notice the damage until it's done.

One More Thing

Show up with your own PPE. Don't expect the site to have it ready for you. The trades reward people who come prepared, and it signals to your foreman from day one that you take it seriously.

At Agora Time, we carry the essentials for new apprentices — gloves, headlamps, and safety footwear are all CSA-certified and built for real site work. Browse our catalogue at agoratime.ca.
