What Agora Means and Why We Chose That Name

People ask about the name. It's a fair question — Agora Time doesn't immediately scream "PPE store." So here's the real story behind it.

Two Words, Two Languages, One Idea

In Portuguese, "agora" means now. As in, this moment. The present. It's also where the tagline comes from — Now Is The Time.

In ancient Greek, "agora" meant the gathering place. The marketplace at the centre of the city, where people came to trade, talk, and do business. It was the public square — accessible to everyone, built around community.

We chose a word that carries both meanings because both are true to what we're building.

Why "Now"

I spent 25 years working in the trades — carpentry, rigging, leading crews. For most of that time, the PPE available to Canadian tradespeople was either too expensive for what it was, hard to find, or just not designed with the actual job site in mind.

Now Is The Time means we're not waiting anymore. We're not waiting for a better time to launch, a bigger budget, more connections, or someone else to do it. The need is real and it's right now — so we built the store right now.

Why "Gathering Place"

The Greek agora was for everyone. Not for the wealthy, not for the well-connected — for the people. That's where "For the people, by the people" comes from. It's not a political slogan. It's a description of who this store is for and who built it.

I'm not a retailer who hired a consultant and found a niche. I'm a tradesperson who got tired of bad PPE and decided to build something better. Every product we carry, every piece of copy on the site, every piece of advice we give — it comes from someone who has actually done the work.

For the People

The people this store is for are the ones who show up before the sun comes up, do dangerous work in all weather, and go home to their families hoping nothing went wrong today. They deserve gear that actually works, from a source they can actually trust.

That's Agora Time. That's the name, and that's what it means.
